Does it really do any good to sign petitions?

I've signed a ton of them and have yet to see any results. I mean I know that sending Obama anything is a waste of time, but you would think that a congressman up for election would at least read it. are we now living in some sort of dictatorship or have the politicians just become that arrogant. getting real tired of being ignored by the people who I help pay.
