Getting saved?

So, I have finally decided to get baptised. I feel closer to God now than ever before, and I've been looking for 20 years. But a friend asked me if I was "saved" and I am not sure if I am. What does that mean? I am getting baptised because I want to show everyone (and God) my covenant between God and I. Is this not the right reason?
